Physical therapy treatments
Q. When I bend my knee, the area around my knee cap hurts. A doctor told me that ultrasound treatment would help. Can I have just ultrasound treatment?
To treat pain around the knee cap, we combine ultrasound treatment with manual therapy.
This is because pain around the knee cap is often due to a misalignment between the ankle and hip joint. While ultrasound therapy can relieve pain and improve your knee’s range of motion, manual therapy will help bring your ankle and hip joint back into correct alignment and thus tackle the root cause of the pain.
Q. If I have a sprain, what kind of exam and treatment will I get at J-CLINIC?
We recommend you come to our physical therapy department, where you will be examined and treated as follows:
1. Musculoskeletal ultrasound exam and palpation
2. Electric therapy (combined high-voltage therapy and ultrasound therapy)
3. Manual therapy
The muscles, joints, and tendons surrounding your sprain may be sore from shielding the sprained area. The tension in the area will be loosened with manual therapy (massage), which will also speed up your recovery.
4. Taping, supporter
5. Post-treatment advice

Q. I have a sprain. How often will I have to come to J-CLINIC for treatment until it heals?
We cannot suggest how often you should come to J-CLINIC for treatment until we examine your injury, movement and range of motion, and the depth of your pain.
The speed of recovery also depends on your habits, how you use your body, and lifestyle.
Q. I hit my left shoulder hard while playing rugby. It may be dislocated. Can I be treated at J-CLINIC?
Before you come to J-CLINIC
- Medical examinations
If you suspect that your shoulder is dislocated, please first go to a hospital for an X-ray. If soft tissues (such as skin, fat tissue, fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels) are injured, the hospital will also do CT and MRI exams.
J-CLINIC does not have the facilities or equipment for these exams.
- Medical treatment
If your shoulder is indeed dislocated, the hospital will perform reduction or surgery to return the dislocated joint to its correct position. J-CLINIC does not perform surgery or reductions for dislocations.
What J-CLINIC can do for you
J-CLINIC can help you get rid of residual pain, heaviness, and discomfort after surgery or reduction and help you improve your shoulder joint movement. Our manual therapy and ultrasound therapy will help improve flexibility and elasticity of the muscles around your shoulder joint. Elasticity refers to the ability of muscles to stretch and contract easily, which makes your movements smoother.
We can also show you exercises and self-care tips you can use at home so you don’t dislocate your shoulder again.
Q. I hurt my right hand when I threw a punch in kickboxing. I suspect it might be fractured because it’s swollen, red, and hurts severely, and I can’t move it. Can I get treated at J-CLINIC?
Before you come to J-CLINIC
- Medical examinations
If you suspect you have a fracture, please first go to a hospital for an X-ray. If soft tissues are injured, the hospital will also do CT and MRI exams.
J-CLINIC does not have the facilities or equipment for such exams.
- Medical treatment
Depending on the condition of the fracture, the hospital will likely return the bone to its original position (reduction) and immobilize your hand. If reduction is difficult, they may perform surgery. J-CLINIC does not perform surgery or reduction for fractures.
What J-CLINIC can do for you
J-CLINIC can help you get rid of residual pain, heaviness, and discomfort after surgery or reduction and help you improve the movement of your finger joints . Our manual therapy and ultrasound therapy will promote flexibility and elasticity of the muscles around your finger joints.
If you fractured your metacarpal (hand) bones, you can speed up recover with our combination therapy. The therapy combines microcurrent therapy (promotes repair of damaged tissue) with ultrasound therapy (promotes cell activation).
Acupuncture
Q. I want to treat my frozen shoulder with acupuncture.
For frozen shoulder, we often propose combining acupuncture with physical therapy treatment (manual therapy and ultrasound treatment).
Acupuncture stimulates the affected area and improves blood flow, which gives you better range of motion and pain relief. However, the pain may be due to misalignment/distortions in your body, which is better addressed by physical therapy. Therefore, we recommend combining acupuncture with physical therapy treatment.
We’ll first ask in detail about your pain and examine your movement, range of motion, and the depth of your pain. Based on that, we’ll propose a treatment plan aimed at the root cause of your pain.

Treatment during pregnancy and postpartum
Q. I am 8 months pregnant and my lower back aches. Can I get treatment?
Yes, you can get treatment. We use manual therapy to ease tension in your muscles and balance the left and right sides of the body in order to reduce the burden on the affected area and relieve pain.
We do not use electrotherapy to treat the abdomen or lower back during pregnancy. However, electrotherapy can be used for neck and shoulder pain and leg injuries.
If you have any concerns, please check with your obstetrician whether you can receive physiotherapy treatment, before making an appointment at J-CLINIC.
Patients with the following illnesses or symptoms are not eligible for physiotherapy treatment at J-CLINIC. (For restrictions on acupuncture treatment, please see our acupuncture, moxibustion, and Chinese medicine FAQ.)

Q. I gave birth 1 month ago. Can I receive postpartum pelvic correction?
Generally speaking, you can get the pelvic correction course from 1.5 months after vaginal birth or 2 or 3 months after a Cesarean section, depending on your condition.
Some patients do come for physical therapy less than 1.5 months postpartum for symptoms such as severe postpartum back pain or fatigue in the neck and shoulder areas from taking care of the baby. Please contact J-CLINIC if you wish to receive treatment.

If you feel unwell after treatment
Q. I just had a treatment, but I feel tired. What should I do?
Drink plenty of water and get rest, and you will recover naturally.
Some patients may experience fatigue, drowsiness, or fever after manual therapy or electrotherapy. This is because the treatment activates sluggish cells, improves lymph and blood circulation, and causes rapid changes in the body as waste and fatigue toxins are discharged all at once.
People more likely to experience these symptoms include those who are sensitive to stimulation, have low physical strength, or have been chronically ill and are receiving treatment for the first time or after a long break. You will recover naturally, but please make sure to drink enough water and rest.
Q. I had a massage yesterday, and now I feel sore in the muscles where I was massaged. What should I do?
We may use massage to stimulate deep muscles to ease your symptoms, and this can cause muscle soreness in some patients. However, there’s no need to worry as the soreness will disappear on its own in a few days.
If during the treatment you feel that the massage is too strong, please let the practitioner know so that they can adjust the intensity.
Q. I had a massage yesterday, and today, I have some bruises on spots where I was massaged. What should I do?
A. The bruises will disappear naturally, within 1-2 weeks. If you want it to heal quickly, apply a cold compress to the bruise the day it appears and the day after.
Bruising can occur if your capillaries (the very thin and delicate blood vessels found throughout your body) are weak and are damaged by the massage.
